Defining the Project

First, we’ll identify what message you want to send and the characteristics of your community and visitors. In addition to messaging, we’ll discuss what you need in regards to website features, like sermon podcasting, a profile page for the staff, and social media integration. We’ll also discuss whether other design pieces are relevant, like a new logo and branding.

Project Scope

This step is all about communication and expectations that we have for each other. Well-outlined expectations are essential to the project’s success and to our working relationship. From the start, we’ll agree on specific deliverables that are included in the project. We will also establish a timeline for various progress points and determine how much time you’ll need to provide feedback on the design.

Planning the Website

A beautifully designed website isn’t of much use if visitors are unable to get the information they’re looking for. For this reason, we initially focus on organizing the content using a site map before getting into the visual design. A site map is a chart of how the content is organized on the website and how a website visitor can navigate to that content.

Visual Design

After structuring your content with the site map, we’ll begin the process of designing what the website will actually look like. This will be a back-and-forth collaborative process, during which I’ll design a particular element like the homepage, send it to you for your thoughts, and then refine the design based off your feedback until we’ve got something we’re both excited about. The homepage and an interior page are usually the style-setters, so once we establish those, I’ll build the rest of the website.

Web Development

When the website design has been approved, it goes to the development stage. It’s here that I code the website using languages like HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript. This will turn the design that we created into a fully functional website.

Site Testing & Adding Content

Before the site is made fully public, we’ll do a soft launch—where the fully functional website is online, but we’re testing it and adding all of the final content needed before the site goes live. A lot of tweaking goes on in this stage, as we test the site in different web browsers, like Safari and Chrome, and on different devices, like laptops and smartphones.

Launch

After thorough testing and proofreading of your website, it’s ready to go live! Your website is now fully operational and ready for all to use.

Maintenance & Tutorials

Your website is a living, breathing thing that needs at least a little bit of maintenance over time and needs content to be actively updated. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a web designer to do this. I’ll create training videos for you that are unique to your website. You will be able to refer to them anytime, in case you need a refresher or want to train someone new to manage the website.
